The law firm of Matzke & Mattoon dates back over 100 years to its founder Paul L. Martin, after World War I. Although the firm has always engaged in a general practice of law, the firm became extensively involved in the oil and gas industry in the 1950’s after discovery of oil in the Denver Julesburg Basin in 1948, including representation of the Ohio Oil Company, which eventually became Marathon Oil Company.
The firm practices in the areas of oil and gas law, estate planning, probate, real estate and corporate. Representation of clients in the area of oil and gas law includes major oil companies, independent oil companies, and includes rendering Title Opinions for drilling purposes and division order purposes, including standup Title Opinions, and representation before the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. The firm also represents landowners in negotiating Oil and Gas Leases with regard to the ownership, transfer and litigation regarding mineral interests. The firm represents several local financial institutions and corporations and has an extensive practice in estate planning and probate. The firm handles all aspects of real estate, including purchase, transfer, partition, condemnation and commercial development. The firm currently has an AV rating through Martindale Hubbell and has had an AV rating for over 50 years.
The membership has generally been three to four attorneys. Current members are Steven F. Mattoon, Managing Partner, Gerald E. Matzke, of Counsel, Tanya M. Martens and Kendra A. Strommen, all of whom are native to Nebraska.
